The development of unconventional or shale gas in North America in recent years has significantly altered the global energy supply assessment. With significant advances in hydraulic fracturing and other technologies, the United States has become the undisputed leader in unlocking vast tracts of gas-bearing shale. Since shale rock exists in almost every corner of the world, developments in the North American shale gas industry are being closely watched as other countries begin to explore the extent of their own unconventional resources.
This course will provide an overview of the federal and state laws governing shale gas development in the U.S. and will highlight pending or proposed legislation and regulatory actions that could affect the shale gas industry. The course will also highlight some of the emerging trends and issues resulting from U.S. shale gas development. One of the most interesting and potentially significant developments is the possibility that increased shale gas production may allow the U.S. to become a major exporter of natural gas as liquefied natural gas (LNG) - a significant shift in thinking from just a few years ago when it was anticipated that the U.S. would become one of the largest importers of LNG
